You will need a needle with a removable syringe to draw up the medication for your pig. We recommend a syringe that is able to hold the amount of medication you will need to properly does your pig, this will be based on your pigs size. We recommend a 18-22 gauge needle. You can buy these individually at farm supply stores, like Tractor Supply or Southern States or order them from Valley Vet Supply Here. Standard hoof trimmers. You can buy these at most local feed stores or home and garden stores. They are almost the spitting image of pruning shears for rose bushes. You can purchase these at Valley Vet Supply Here.
A body brush your pig will enjoy! These are very similar to horse/equine brushes and are interchangeable. You can buy them at local feed supply stores and even tack stores for horses. They typically range from $3.00- $25.00 a brush, depending on brand. You can buy this one thru Valley Vet Supply Here.
This is a face brush, also very similar to those in the horse industry. They are smaller than a typical body brush and have softer bristles to use on the face areas. You can pick these up at local feed supply stores or even tack stores for horses. You can also order thru Valley Vet Supply Here.
This is a skin conditioner for pigs. It helps eliminate dry and flaky skin and produces a nice shine. It can be brushed on to your pig a couple times a week. I use this primarily for outdoor pigs because it is a little greasy and can rub off on furniture. But it can be used either way. You may be able to find it at a local farm supply store or you can order it thru Valley Vet Supply Here.
This is another pig skin conditioner on the market, that is made by Weaver, that I have used frequently on my outdoor pigs. It helps to replace natural oils in the skin and prevents flaking. Can be brushed in to the hair. You may be able to find it at local farm supply stores or you can order thru Valley Vet Supply Here.
Many people have asked us about a recommendation for organic coconut oil they can give their pigs that suffer from very dry and flaky skin. This is one of the main brands that we recommend and it can be easily purchased at Walmart stores. You feed 1 TBS for every 25 pounds of body weight. You can see more details about the product via Walmart here.
Vetrap Bandage. You can pick these up at any local farm supply store or tack store. There are recommended to always have on hand in case of an emergency. You can also order them thru Valley Vet Supply Here.
A decent rectal thermometer that will be used just for your pet pig is recommended. Digital ones are faster and work pretty well. You can buy one at any local drug store or order one thru Valley Vet Supply Here.
A recommended, shallow, stainless steel pet dish by DuraPet to properly feed a piglet. You can buy these at most major pet retail stores or at Amazon Here.
An example of a milk replacer that is suitable for piglets. You must make sure that it specifically states that it is designed for use on piglets because some are not. You can usually find a suitable milk replacer at any feed supply store or you can order one Lambert Vet Supply Here.
Another example of a multi-species milk replacer that is suitable for piglets. This one can be found at many feed supply stores or purchased through Southern States Here.
This is an example of a multiple species colostrum replacement that is mentioned in the Frequently Asked Questions page. This can be purchased at most major feed supply stores. You can also buy from Valley Vet Supply Here.
This is the infant rice cereal that we mention in the Frequently Asked Questions page. This is a great additive to milk replacer after the first week, to promote healthy growth and start solid food training. See more about it at Gerber Here.
Beaver Bag shavings are thick and wonderful for outdoor pig homes. Make sure to clean and change them on a regular basis though, as they can collect moisture and insects. You usually can find this brand at all major tack/horse stores. If you can't find them, ask a feed supply store if they can order them for you. If all else fails... just make sure to get a larger/thicker flake. Do not get the super fine or "swift pick" style shavings because they are so fine they can easily be inhaled and cause an infection in the respiratory system. Horses are farther from the ground and this doesn't cause an issue the way it could with a pig.
For outdoor pig enclosures, we recommended using hog panels, or something in the like. They are very thick and sturdy panels that pigs have a difficult time pushing around, biting or climbing on. Attached to deeply rooted stabilizing posts, they make an excellent caging system for outdoor use. They also have gates that match this exact pattern and are used for pigs. There are many other types of "roll-out" fencing material that can be used and purchased in larger sections. Just make sure that it is thick, not super flexible, a pig can't bite through it or jump on it and tear it down. The roll out type fencing also needs to be sunk in to the ground at least 2-4 inches so the pig cannot root underneath it and escape. Hog panels are not flexible and wont allow for major rooting. You can see examples of hog panels at Tractor Supply or any major farm supply store. Visit TSC for details Here.
This is the hog sorting board that was mentioned in our behavior and training section of the website. These boards are very handy to have around when you have a major behavior issue with a stubborn or aggressive pig. They let you push or "move the pig" without getting hurt if the pig decides to get nasty and push back. Most of the time these boards have to be ordered. Some Tractor Supplies may carry them but the majority of them don't. You can order one here from QC Supply.
A Hog Show Cane that can also be used as an extension of the arm when attempting to "shift" train an aggressive pig that may otherwise bite. If the cane is too large for a smaller hand, there are also smaller aids called bats, crops, or pipes. Again, all they are is an extension of your are to nudge the pig away from you. You can buy them here at Sullivan Supply.
Disposable pet pools are excellent for pigs and outdoor use! They are very inexpensive and can be thrown away every year and easily replaced. I purchase mine every summer from our local PetsMart and it costs me about $5.00 on sale. For some pigs that may have a difficult time getting in to the pool you can either sink the pool in to a hole in the ground OR cut a small, but not so deep to where the water all spills out, hole (like a door) for access. Please see PetsMarts Ad on these pools for further details and to order.
We always recommend having a crate for your pig before you ever pick them up. A wire crate such as the ones made by MidWest, works well and is easy to clean. Remember to get one for the size your pig will be, not how big it is as a piglet (make an educated guess). You can find these at PetMart, Petco or any other large pet retailers, or you can order one thru Amazon Here.
Large Sky Kennels are also recommend because they are easier to lift in and out of a car than the wire ones. The wire ones work great for home use, but these work better for travel. All major local pet stores should carry these or you can order one from Amazon Here.
These modified "A" style harnesses created by PigGear.com, are much better for your pig than any that were originally built for dogs. Pigs slip out of the dog harnesses because of their larger neck and shoulders. You can order your custom harness thru PigGear.com
Another custom pig harness company that makes great products. Please visit their website for ordering Here.
Kris Shot Shoes and Straps.
These egg crate or memory foam beds are great for larger pigs that need more support and may be less prone to ripping up a bed. You can find them at any major pet retailers or order from Amazon Here.
An example of a nice memory foam bed. These can also be found at major pet retailers or can be ordered thru Amazon Here.
There are also many custom pig bed creators out there on Etsy and Facebook. This is one of our many favorites. Theses are by Coccolino Creations. They can be found here and ordered from Etsy.
